What is CBD Skincare?
SO WHAT EXACTLY IS CBD OIL AND WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER USING SKINCARE PRODUCTS WITH IT IN?
Ok, I’m guessing if you’re reading this, then you had the same thoughts as I did when I first heard about CBD oil – Being a 90’s teen meant that the first two questions I had were: ‘Is it legal?’ and ‘Will it get me high?’ So let me answer these, and other common questions for you… (and I promise not to mention bongs or blowbacks)!
I’LL START WITH THE SCIENCE BIT…
CBD (or cannabidiol), and is a compound found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. There are many species of cannabis sativa, of which hemp and cannabis (often called marijuana) are just two, and CBD can derive from both. Legally, hemp is defined as a cannabis plant that contains 0.3% or less THC, while marijuana is a cannabis plant that contains more than 0.3% THC.
The CBD compound is extracted from the plant using one of four current extraction methods – CO2, Olive Oil, Solvent or steam – and then added to a carrier oil. This is then added to skincare products using the brands specific formulations.
But what is THC I hear you ask? That’s the stuff that gives the high, otherwise known as tetrahydrocannabinol.
Simply put, CBD containing less than 0.3% THC is legal within the UK.
The Poko brand that we stock is 100% THC free therefore completely legal, with no high.
You’re welcome… I think! ♥
NOW FOR THE EXCITING PRODUCT STUFF…
You’ve probably heard about CBD being used in all kinds of ways, from edibles like chocolate, gummies and coffee to balms and creams applied directly to the skin. Everyone has their own preferences of what products they find most effective – I have tried and tested most over the last few years and have found varying results, so don’t worry if you feel the first one you try isn’t great. There are some awesome products out there so keep looking if you are serious about incorporating a CBD product into your lifestyle.
This is what you can potentially look forward to when you start using skincare products containing CBD.
- Rehydrates dry skin, restoring a healthy-looking complexion
- Diffuses skin reactivity: typically redness, sensitivity, acne and blemishes
- Soothes and calms skin with its anti-inflammatory properties
- Regulates production of sebum (oil) which helps fight against acne and blemishes
- Antioxidants help lessen the visible signs of ageing when used topically
- Counteracts free-radical damage and reduces inflammation which can help to visibly reduce wrinkles, skin dullness and redness
- Studies indicate that CBD may also be effective in the treatment of eczma and psoriasis
My personal experience of using CBD skincare has been incredible! I think I must subconsciously, and repeatedly, touch the end of my nose, as it gets really red with lots of annoying pimples. This is especially annoying at Christmas when I am frequently referred to as Rudolph, not ideal! However, I can now control this by using a combo of Soothing Serum and Azelaic Acid Spot Treatment – No more having to cover with thick concealer, only to exacerbate the problem, winner!
So there you have it, I mean why wouldnt you want to jump on the CBD bandwagon straight away, hey? If you have any questions, we would love to help – Pop us an email through or use our contact form here.
